HAMMOND - Board of Education candidate Scott W. Kron says his main purpose as a school board member will be to prevent and reverse budget cuts.

“They’re making a lot of cuts, a lot of which are unnecessary,” he said Thursday. “They’re cutting more stuff and adding more teacher’s assistants. Their focus should be keeping teacher’s jobs and keeping the kids educated.”

Mr. Kron, who works for the town Highway Department and is a member of the fire department, is running against Kevin F. Ennis for the seat currently held by Dr. James R. Tague, who is not seeking another term. Mr. Kron said as a parent, he sees the effects budget cuts can have on students.

“Two other candidates do not have kids in the school and they do not know what kids are looking for,” he said. “One of the biggest issues we have is sports mergers. I don’t think it’s fair that other district coaches make our players sit out on games in favor of their players.”

He said he does not have a hidden agenda.

“I like my opinions to be known, and I am not a yes—man,” he said. “I don’t have any family up here. I don’t owe anybody anything. I am not on any one person’s side. My goal is to keep Hammond school in Hammond and to keep things organized and where they should be.”

Ronald E. Tulley II will be running against Theodore P. “Ted” Elk for Mr. Tulley’s seat.

The vote will be held May 15 at Hammond Central School.
