A Watertown man was sentenced Monday in Jefferson County Court to up to four years in state prison for trying to sell cocaine in the city.

Michael J. Purvis, 24, was sentenced to four years in prison, followed by two years of additional supervision upon his release, for an April 19 guilty plea to third-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was indicted in November on allegations that he sold cocaine in late September. He was sentenced to the prison system’s Willard Drug Rehabilitation Program. If an inmate completes the 90-day program, he serves the remainder of his sentence under parole supervision.

Mr. Purvis was sentenced as a second-felony offender, having been convicted in December 2009 of fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance for selling cocaine. He was sentenced in that matter to a year in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building.

In other court activity Monday:

Nicholas D. Rafus, 27, of 431 Stone St., Watertown, was sentenced to 2 years in prison, followed by 2 years’ post-release supervision, for an April 18 guilty plea to third-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance. He admitted that, on Nov. 23, he possessed cocaine with intent to sell the drug at his residence.

Mickel A. Founty, 22, Watertown, was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by two years’ post-release supervision, for an April 17 guilty plea to third-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance and an admission to violating probation. He was charged in an indictment handed up in November with selling cocaine last summer. He was serving five years’ probation imposed in March 2011 for fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He admitted in that case to selling cocaine within the county in September 2010.

David R. Oviatt, 42, West Carthage, was sentenced to about three weeks’ time served at the PSB and five years’ probation for March 14 guilty pleas to felony aggravated driving while intoxicated and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He admitted that he drove while intoxicated Feb. 20 on Comstock Road in the town of Lorraine while his driver’s license was suspended or revoked for a prior alcohol-related offense in 2011 in West Carthage. He also was fined $2,000, had his driver’s license revoked and was ordered to install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he drives.

Fabian Rivera, 26, Watertown, was arraigned on charges of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fourth-degree conspiracy. The charges were contained in a grand jury indictment unsealed in court. It is alleged that he conspired with others to possess heroin with the intent to sell the drug in late September in Watertown. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was sent to the PSB on $30,000 bail.

Kristie L. Towles, 23, Adams, was arraigned on counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.
