The Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club will be holding its annual charity auction tonight at 6 p.m. the Oddfellows Lodge.

“They have a big hall and they’ve donated that to us,” said Auction Chair Jeffrey R. Swanson, who added the Kiwanis Club and the entire Ogdensburg Community is thankful for the support of the lodge.

“The Oddfellows and Rebekahs of Ogdensburg have been supporting Ogdensburg and the surrounding communities for more than 60 years,” he said. “Some of the Organizations include: The Seaway Festival, The Cancer Center, Relay for Life, Ogdensburg Boys & Girls club, the Dare Program, Youth for Christ, The Kiwanis Club Auction, Minor Hockey, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, several sport teams for Boys and Girls of all ages and individuals in need of assistance.”

And it’s through the generosity of others that the Kiwanis Club is able to put on the auction every year.

“Normally we have about 100 businesses who donate to the auction and it’s on average $20 or $25,” he said, explaining that while a unique collection of items will be available, roughly half of the items will be gift certificates, meaning people can take those and buy with them whatever they want.

“There will be more than 50 gift certificates to area restaurants, shops and businesses,” he said.

Mr. Swanson also said another staple of the auction is flowers.

“The greenhouse over at BOCES has donated a lot of plants, as has Basta’s and Farrand’s Flowers,” he said.

An auction can’t be held without an auctioneer and there comes another generous donation, as Mr. Swanson explained Bob Kosman will once again be servicing that role.

“He has been our auctioneer for a long time. He donates his time and he doesn’t charge any fees,” he said. “Whatever the sale price is, the club gets.”

Money raised at the auction is then used to fund the various scholarships the club awards each year.

In addition to scholarships, Mr. Swanson noted the Kiwanis Club supports more than 800 local children each year through its soccer and baseball programs and sponsorship of the Key Club at Ogdensburg Free Academy.

Admission to the auction is free and a concession stand will be available.
