Need more proof that Matt Doheny is the preferred candidate of GOP leaders to win the June 26 primary against Kellie Greene?
Probably not, but it came today anyway in a news release announcing the support of state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and the senators who represent parts of the 21st Congressional District. Mr. Doheny has the Conservative and Independence party lines already in his effort to unseat Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh.
The senators quoted in a news release include: Hugh T. Farley, Schenectady (side note: Mr. Farley vacations in the north country); Joseph A. Griffo, Rome; Elizabeth O'C. Little, Queensbury; Roy J. McDonald, Saratoga; and Patricia A. Ritchie, Heuvelton.
"Matt Doheny is exactly who upstate New York residents need representing them in Washington," Mr. Skelos, a Long Island Republican, said in the news release.
Ms. Greene has received the endorsement of only one party leader — the Fulton County Conservative Party chief, who is the chief of a party organization in name only. (There are two Jefferson County committee member who supports her — Mike Bell and Charles Kingsley. There's also one in Essex County, John Sharkey, the campaign says, and there are more in other parts of the district that haven't given their names to be published).*
Mr. Doheny, on the other hand, has the support of the National Republican Congressional Campaign, every GOP committee in the district, and now a handful of Senate GOP figures.
Of course, here's the necessary caveat: Polls show that endorsements don't mean much. That's not to say many residents will base their votes on what Patty Ritchie or Joe Griffo have to say, but it's enlightening all the same.
It's also the first time that the Doheny campaign has mentioned "June 26" in a news release. So there's something to chew on.
*This post has been updated to reflect a response from the Greene campaign about how many Jefferson County committee members support Ms. Greene.
