THERESA A 16-year-old town of Theresa youth was placed in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building early Monday after being charged in a burglary during which state police say the property owners mail was stolen and subsequently burned.
Michael A. Iffland Jr., 27107 Wilson Road, is charged with third-degree burglary, fifth-degree arson, fourth-degree criminal mischief and petit larceny. Bail was set by Theresa Town Justice Roger Duvall at $2,500.
A 15-year-old girl also was charged Sunday, and faces prosecution as a juvenile in Jefferson County Family Court on charges of petit larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief. More arrests are anticipated, police said.
The investigation began May 27 after a garage burglary was discovered on property on Eddy Road. Mail was removed from a mailbox at the location and was taken to a field, where it was burned.
Although burning mail can be a federal offense, the U.S. attorneys office in Syracuse waived prosecution in favor of prosecution on state charges, an investigator said.
Additional arrests are anticipated, the investigator said.
