A former commander of Fort Drum took over the day-to-day operations of NATO forces in Afghanistan at a ceremony Tuesday in Kabul.

Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, who led the 10th Mountain Division on post from 2009 to 2011, will lead the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, according to a release from the command.

Gen. Terry also will be deputy commanding general for U.S. forces-Afghanistan. He took over at a ceremony at the command’s headquarters in Kabul International Airport. He replaces Lt. Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti.

“We left our comfortable homes and loved ones to become part of a team that will take the next steps in bringing lasting stability to Afghanistan,” Gen. Terry said.

Gen. Terry, who is commander of V Corps, Wiesbaden, Germany, was a battalion commander at Fort Drum from 1994 to 1996 and returned as deputy commanding general in 2004.
