Throwing his support behind the conservative darling in the race, Matt Doheny cast his lot with Wendy Long in the Senate primary six days away.
Mr. Doheny will also be on the ballot on Tuesday with Ms. Long, a Manhattan attorney who is looking to take on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in November.
Ms. Long, who will visit Watertown on Friday, has the Conservative Party line in the race. She faces Rep. Bob Turner, R-New York City, and Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos.
There is some measure of party-loyalty undercurrent going on here. The Conservative Party has accused the Republican Party of having its thumb on the scale in favor of Mr. Turner. The state Republican Party stays out of primary battles.
Mr. Doheny is a loyal Republican, but he has also received the Conservative Party endorsement from Mike Long (no relation to Wendy) after missing out on it in 2010.
Here are the happy quotes, in which Ms. Long also endorses Mr. Doheny:
"I encourage all registered Republicans of 21st Congressional District to vote in the June 26th primary. It is essential that Wendy Long is elected to be our Republican nominee and together we can advance the cause of smaller less intrusive government in Washington."
"I thank Matt for his encouragement and support in the coming election. Matt's story is the American dream, he proved that hard work leads to success and I look forward to working side by side in Washington to make sure that dream stays alive for all New Yorkers."
