MASSENA - The beach season got off to a good start, according to Massena Recreation Superintendent Richard A. Boprey.
He said they 98 paying cars Saturday at the Massena Town Beach and that jumped to 128 on Sunday. The cost is $5 per vehicle.
Were busy. Id say we had a very good crowd that enjoyed the beach on the weekend, Mr. Boprey said.
The temperature and lack of precipitation didnt hurt the effort. The high on Saturday was 81 degrees, and it rose slightly to 85 degrees on Sunday. The average temperature for this time of year is 76 degrees, according to figures provided on The Weather Channels website.
The numbers were good at the beach because the weather was good. It was nice with the beach officially opening that we had the weather to accommodate them, Mr. Boprey said.
In addition, the three pavilions at the beach were booked throughout the weekend, at a rate of $30 per pavilion, he said.
Weve had a lot of pavilion bookings. The pavilion bookings are really coming through. We have people that call in January and February to book them, according to the recreation superintendent.
The pavilions are rented for a number of occasions, he said, such as family gatherings, union parties and birthdays.
Weve had quite a few calls for bookings, he said.
The beach began its seven-day-a-week schedule on Saturday, and among the visitors next week will be participants in the summer recreation program, which starts Monday.
The next couple of days could be busy at the beach, with the The National Weather Service predicting above normal temperatures to develop over the area today and Thursday. Theyre predicting highs in the mid 80s to mid 90s, with the humidity making it feel even warmer.
Todays forecast is for mostly sunny skies with a high near 93, and low around 75 this evening. For Thursday, the forecast calls for sunny skies with a high near 92 before temperatures drop into the 70s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
