An explosive ordnance disposal team from Fort Drum helped emergency crews after the discovery of a large expended flare near the Old Sodus Bay Lighthouse.
According to a release from the Wayne County sheriffs office, law enforcement was called out about 4:15 p.m. Thursday after the flare, measured at about 18 to 20 inches in length and 3 to 4 inches in diameter, was discovered by a resident. It had a large warning label advising those who found it to contact military and police officials.
Upon arrival, police said, the disposal unit took the flare to an undisclosed location, where it was neutralized.
