CANTON SUNY Cantons student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers placed eighth in the nation with its steel bridge.
The college was one of 47 teams to participate in the ASCE and American Institute of Steel Construction National Steel Bridge Championships over Memorial Day weekend at Clemson University, Clemson, S.C. The top-10 position followed a victory at the regional championships SUNY Canton hosted.
The team took third place in construction speed with a 6.7-minute assembly time. The students took 11th place in the lightness category and 13th in display.
The team has won the regional championships 12 times in 16 years and a national championship in 2009.
The bridge competition aims to supplement students education in technology and engineering. Students oversee all aspects of the fabrication, assembly and testing of their one-10th-scale model bridge.
