CANTON — The village Board of Trustees appointed retired state police 1st Sgt. Victor N. Rycroft temporary chief at a special meeting Wednesday. Mr. Rycroft, Morley, will be paid $18,000 for three months.

His appointment, which starts June 28, gives the village breathing room in which to select a provisional chief. The board had appointed Basil W. Cheney to the post but he resigned Monday after a month on the job when he discovered the $75,000 annual salary was less than he was paid as a sergeant in the department when overtime was included.

Mr. Rycroft, a member of the Canton Central School board, graduated from Canton High School and Canton College of Technology. He began his career with the village police in 1962.

After graduating from the State Police Academy in 1967, he was a trooper in Saratoga and Warren counties before returning to St. Lawrence County in 1980. He retired from the state police in 1992.
