LOWVILLE — A Carthage man was sentenced Friday in Lewis County Court to state prison time for fatally shooting a member of his hunting party last fall near Deer River.

Travis I. Shampine, 20, of 512 Alexandria St., was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison and $2,950 restitution on charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, hunting deer after hours, hunting deer with a prohibited firearm and hunting deer without a license, to which he pleaded guilty June 8.

It was also recommended that he be enrolled in a drug treatment program through the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Mr. Shampine was accused of causing the death of a member of his four-man hunting party, Arnold Camidge, 55, by shooting him in the hip with a .22-caliber rifle while they were hunting after sunset Oct. 23 off Station Road in the town of Denmark.
