First of a two-part series. Tomorrow, I'll be out talking with Kellie Greene supporters when they rally on Public Square.

Armed with scripts, free pizza, good cheer and some high-tech telephones, a phalanx of Matt Doheny volunteers made some last-minute preparations Monday night for the next day's primary.

Are you going to vote tomorrow? they would ask. If the answer was yes, they'd press a button.

If the answer was yes, they'd ask who for. If it was Mr. Doheny, who is facing off in a primary against Kellie Greene to take on Rep. Bill Owens on Tuesday, the volunteers would ask if the caller needed transportation to the polls.

If the answer was no — which occurred only once, according to Jude Seymour, a Doheny spokesman — the volunteers would politely say they hoped they could count on the caller's support on Nov. 6.

That was the mood in the Doheny camp: confident, but taking no precautions before Tuesday's showdown in which Mr. Doheny is the heavy favorite.

He's the favorite in no small part due to his major fundraising advantage, which helped him pay for all that fancy equipment.

Ms. Greene's supporters, she said, were phone-banking from their own homes, and the candidate herself was sending out lists of voters to call.
