PETIT LARCENY - MASSENA - Village police charged Elizabeth M. Collins, 23, of 151 Leslie Road, Massena, with petit larceny Sunday night stemming from an incident that occurred June 13. She allegedly stole property belonging to Kelly Greene while she was living at that Tamarack Street home. Collins’ mother also resides at that residence. Collins reportedly stole three $1 silver certificates with blue stamps and used them to pay for a beer at The Rusty Wheel.

“ ... I was sitting at home chatting with some friends about going out to the bars. Since I didn’t have any money to go out, I decided to look around the house for some money to buy some drinks,” she said.

Collins said she began searching in Ms. Greene’s bedroom and took some money she found there. She said she went to a friend’s house and then to The Rusty Wheel. “... I ordered a beer and paid for it with the $3 that I had taken from Kelly’s room,” she said, noting she left the bar a short time later and went to Amanda Degagne’s residence.

“Soon after, my mother, Kathy Bradish, showed up and started yelling at me and began asking me questions about stealing some silver dollar certificates from Kelly, which I denied,” Collins said in her statement to police.

She said her mother left but called her a short time later and told her that she needed to move out of the Tamarack Street residence. “I thought the money I stole from Kelly was normal currency and not silver dollar certificates since it looked about the same,” she said.

Ms. Greene, whose pizza business is located in the same building as The Rusty Wheel, said Collins had been living at her residence for approximately a month when the incident took place.

“Bob Bishop came up to me and showed me some silver certificates that Elizabeth had used to buy the drink. Bob, knowing that she was living with me, thought maybe she had stolen these from my house since she was known to steal,” Ms. Greene told police.

She said she went home and discovered that approximately 30 to 40 of her silver $1, $2 and $5 certificates were missing.
