OGDENSBURG — They come from all over with names like Moon Mission and The Lady Iz Magic, horses (and their owners) vying for blue ribbons at the St. Lawrence Valley Horseman’s Association shows.

The group held its second of four shows this season Sunday at its home at 2000 Linden St. About 50 riders competed in a host of categories.

“It’s a good time; we want it to be family-friendly fun,” said St. Lawrence Valley Horseman’s Association President Anita M. Morrill.

Continuing a family tradition, Carol J. and Dale L. Edson brought their 16-year-old granddaughter, Laura E. Cook, to compete.

“We were here 30 years ago with our children, just like a lot of people here,” Mr. Edson said.

Ms. Cook said she has been riding since she was 10 years old. “It just is a good way to vent energy; it’s fun,” she said.

Many riders start even younger. Three-year-old Rosalyn E. Coronel, daughter of Jenna E. Coronel, was among the competitors.

“I’m just a fan of horses,” said Jenna Coronel, who was set to compete with her horse, Jasper.

A passion for riding that starts young can last for a long time. Just ask Cheynne M. Youngs. She is a student at St. Lawrence University, Canton, and she has been riding since she was 2.

“Me and my mother, we’ve been showing for a very long time,” Ms. Youngs said.

The event began at 9:30 a.m. and stretched into the late afternoon, with categories for jumping and pleasure riding and many other tests of horsemanship.

“It gives me a chance to work on my skills,” said Sovann J. Dary, 15. She has been riding for less than three years, but she said she finds it focusing and relaxing.
