Clinton Street construction underway

Clinton Street will be reduced to single-lane traffic from now until sometime in September.

As part of the Clinton Street reconstruction project, the street — from Washington Street to South Massey Street — will be torn up and restored this summer. Verizon began sectioning off the street Monday. The construction contractors will begin July 9, according to city engineer Jeffrey C. Hammond.

“The street will be open to the public, but at times, it will be down to one lane,” he said.

The nearly $1.5 million city project will involve replacing sewers and curbs, as well as repaving the street. On the other side of Washington Street, the nearly $1 million renovation of the Dulles State Office Building garage will be under way until November. The coinciding projects have concerned local businesses, such as Watertown Savings Bank. Mark R. Lavarnway, the bank’s CEO and president, has said the construction will affect his customers and employees.

Crews will install temporary barricades and signs and have flaggers on site throughout the duration of the project, city officials said. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes if possible for the duration of the job.
