Ruth I. Akins, 91, West Seneca Turnpike, formerly of Alexandria Bay died July 3, 2012 at Bernadene Apartments.

Born November 27, 1920 in Alexandria Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and the late Elsie Leonhardt Meisenheimer. At age sixteen she graduated from Alexandria Central School, then graduated from Canton ATI.

She married Frank Akins of Alexandria Bay in 1940. Mr. Akins died in 1965.

Mrs. Akins worked for the Alexandria Central School cafeteria, and was employed with the Monticello and Capt. Thompson’s at Pine Tree Point, all in Alexandria Bay, Gravina’a Nursery, and Central City Bodies, AASR for 20 years as an administrative assistant, both in Syracuse.

She was a member of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Syracuse for 48 years, WELCA women’s group, Girl Scouts of America as a Brownie leader, Order of the Eastern Star BonaFide- Hiawatha- Solvay Chapter and Thousand Islands-Calumet Chapter in Alexandria Bay with over 65 years of service.

Mrs. Akins enjoyed spending time on the St. Lawrence River, reading, assisting her daughter, Janice in making crafts for “Country Accents” and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was her granddaughter, Taylor’s number one fan at her Softball games, cheering her on and very proud of all of Taylor’s other achievements.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Dennis Horton, Theresa; five grandchildren, Taylor Kubber, Theresa, Shawna (Jeffrey) Shorkey, Cape Vincent, Alexander Horton and Kurt (Jessica) Horton, all of Theresa and Christopher (Amy) Horton, Watertown; ten great grandchildren; and a niece, Patricia Postorino, Fort Myers, FL., several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

A sister, Elizabeth Meisenheimer, a great nephew, Frank Postorino, Jr. and her companion of many years, Nelson Woodruff died before her.

A Celebration of Life will be 5 p.m. Monday at the Reformed Church of the Thousand Islands, Alexandria Bay with Pastor John Saraka officiating. Burial will be at Redwood Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 5 pm Sunday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.
