Accepted to College

Castorland

Accepted to college: Logan Kempney will attend Edinboro (Pa.) University in the fall. Mr. Kempney, son of Theresa and Shawn Kempney, Castorland, graduated last month from Beaver River Central School, Beaver Falls, where he participated in cross country, track, band, chorus and jazz ensemble. He will major in nursing at Edinboro University and participate on the cross country and track teams.

Lewis County

Envirothon: Winners have been announced for the 2012 Lewis County Envirothon, hosted by the Lewis County Soil and Water Conservation District on May 15 at Camp Oswegatchie. Teams of students participated from South Lewis, Beaver River and Copenhagen Central Schools. The students were tested on wildlife, soils, aquatics, forestry and this year’s issue, “Low Impact Development,” and each team gave an oral presentation on the current issue.

First place

Beaver River Beavers, 446 points: Cody Houppert, Griffin Keefer, Corey Lyndaker and Corbin Pominville

Second place

Copenhagen Team Epoch, 433.6 points: Connor Berrus, Elise Edmonds, Lyndsey Fitzpatrick, Sara McNamara and Derek Nicol

Third place

South Lewis Old Team, 392.6: Megan Bourgeois, Katie Harvey, Lyndsay Snyder, Ashtin Tripp and Ian Wilson.

Scholarships

Belleville

Scholarship: J.W. Allen, recent graduate of Belleville Henderson Central School, Belleville, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from Cargill Animal Nutrition, Gouverneur. In addition, his school received $200 to support its library.

To receive dean’s list honors at Florida Institute of Technology for the spring semester, students must receive a grade point average of 3.4 or higher.

To receive dean’s list honors at Sacred Heart University for the spring semester, students must receive a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Adams

Receives doctorate: Eric Sidman, Adams, graduated magna cum laude with a doctor of pharmacy degree from Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He is working on his pharmacy residency at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse.

Calcium

Receives doctorate: Matthew T. Stehr, Calcium, received a doctor of physical therapy degree on May 26 from the University of Scranton (Pa.).

Copenhagen

Receives master’s: Samantha Mary Berghorn, daughter of Kevin and Kathie Berghorn, Tylerville, received a master’s degree in forensic science from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va., in May. She has accepted a position of firearms examiner at the Onondaga County Forensic Lab.

Ms. Berghorn graduated in 2006 from Copenhagen Central School and in 2010 from St. Lawrence University, Canton, with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.

Massena

Receives doctorate: Brooke J. Love, Massena, received a doctor of physical therapy degree from the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt., on May 20. Miss Love, a 2006 Massena Central School graduate, graduated cum laude in 2010 from the University of Vermont, with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and food sciences.

Ogdensburg

Receives doctorate: Leah Vinch Shaw, Ogdensburg, received a doctor of pharmacy degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

Saranac Lake

Receives master’s: Erin Yousey, Saranac Lake, received a master’s degree in inclusive education: childhood from Nazareth College, Rochester.

Stewardship: Several north country residents will spend their summer as watershed stewards in a Paul Smith’s College-led initiative to keep lakes, ponds and waterways free of invasive species. The program, part of the Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College, will run through Labor Day with voluntary inspections of boats entering and leaving the water for invasives.
