HEUVELTON - The town of Oswegatchie will take part in a St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services hazard mitigation plan that will involve all the countys municipalities.
Meeting Monday, the town board voted 5-0 of participating in the so-called multi-hazard mitigation plan that must be adopted by next year.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved program will allow localities to help shape a countywide plan to deal with avoid the damage of disasters. With a flood, for example, potential problems like too small culverts would be identified. FEMA would replace them.

FEMA has awarded the county up to $75,000 for the plans. The county will be required to come up with a $25,000 match, which it provide through technical and planning services. Oswegatchie And the countys other towns, villages and city wont be required to pay for the plan.
