Oswegatchie joins county anti-hazard plan

HEUVELTON - The town of Oswegatchie will take part in a St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services hazard mitigation plan that will involve all the county’s municipalities.

Meeting Monday, the town board voted 5-0 of participating in the so-called multi-hazard mitigation plan that must be adopted by next year.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency-approved program will allow localities to help shape a countywide plan to deal with avoid the damage of disasters. With a flood, for example, potential problems like too small culverts would be identified. FEMA would replace them.

“It’s for floods, microbursts, disasters,” said Highway Superintendent Karl W. Cougler.

FEMA has awarded the county up to $75,000 for the plans. The county will be required to come up with a $25,000 match, which it provide through technical and planning services. Oswegatchie And the county’s other towns, villages and city won’t be required to pay for the plan.
