CANTON Former Canton Supervisor Frank J. Norton, 85, was killed in a single-car accident Saturday afternoon when his vehicle overturned several times and hit a small tree.
Mr. Norton, Route 68, was eastbound on West Main Street about 4 p.m. when he lost control of his Pontiac Vibe, which veered onto the shoulder before crossing the road, village police said.
The car then went through a couple of yards and overturned several times before ending up in the driveway of the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services building at 40 W. Main St., Sgt. James R. Santimaw said.
Mr. Norton was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, where he was pronounced dead by St. Lawrence County Coroner James M. Sienkiewycz.
An autopsy was scheduled for today.
The state police accident reconstruction team has been called in to investigate the crash, but speed may have been a factor.
Sgt. Santimaw said Mr. Nortons car exceeded the 30 mph speed limit in that section of the road, although he did not know Saturday night how fast the vehicle was going.
Mr. Norton served as the town supervisor for 16 years, retiring in 1989. He then served on the Canton Town Council.
