ADAMS — While sitting on a park bench Thursday night in front of Adams Baptist Church, a woman snorted a crushed narcotic drug allegedly passed to her by a companion, according to village police.

The companion, John M. Merideth, 32, of 36½ Grange Ave., was being held Friday in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, with bail set at $10,000 by Lorraine Town Justice Eric C. Sheldon. He was arrested on charges of fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Natalie K. Weaver, 19, of 59 Spring St., is cited with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police said the couple’s suspicious activity was observed shortly after 10 p.m., when the woman allegedly was snorting a powdered substance that was contained in a rolled $20 bill. The substance was found to be Lorcet, a brand name for hydrocodone.

Mr. Merideth possessed electric scales, measuring spoons, numerous Lorcet pills, a pipe and marijuana, and was crushing pills to pass the substance to Ms. Weaver, police alleged.

Mr. Merideth has a conviction record that includes criminal contempt and harassment in 2010, and third-degree assault earlier this year.
