OLD FORGE An off-duty police officer from the Rochester area accidentally killed his son at a motel in this northern Herkimer County village, according to state police.
Police said Michael Leach, 59, Rochester, employed as a police officer in the Wyoming County village of Perry, at 12:51 a.m. Saturday shot at what he believed to be an intruder and killed his son, Matthew S. Leach, 37, Rochester.
Michael Leach was taken by ambulance to Faxton St. Lukes Healthcare, Utica, for treatment of an unspecified medical issue.
His department-issued .45-caliber Glock handgun was used in the incident, police said.
The investigation is continuing in conjunction with acting Herkimer County District Attorney Jeff Carpenter, police said.
Town of Webb police initially responded to the call.
