FORT DRUM — The post’s new garrison commander, Col. Gary A. Rosenberg, described himself as approachable as he entered into his new assignment.

“We’re here to help solve problems,” Col. Rosenberg said. “That’s what we do.”

He will be tasked with leading the post’s day-to-day operations, including the oversight of the post’s civilian employees. Col. Rosenberg, who has spent 23 years in the Army, previously led the garrison in Bamberg, Germany.

Col. Rosenberg was publicly introduced at a change-of-command ceremony Friday morning.

He replaces Col. Noel T. Nicolle, who has led the post’s garrison since 2010. Davis D. Tindoll Jr., director of the Atlantic Region for Installation Management Command, praised Col. Nicolle for his effort and the positive effect he made on the community.

“Make no mistake, the Nicolles as a garrison command team have done their part in making Fort Drum a model installation,” Mr. Tindoll said.

Taking to the lectern, Col. Nicolle thanked his civilian counterparts for their hard work in his time on post.

Many of the post’s civilian directors stood in formation during the ceremony in clothing ranging from suits to buttoned-up shirts, a stark difference from the usual lineup of soldiers in uniform who take part in many of the change-of-command ceremonies.

Col. Nicolle also thanked the post’s military leadership, as well as staff for civilian support organizations in the region.

He talked about his enthusiasm for the north country, calling it the “warmest place that I’ve ever been.” Col. Nicolle next will be stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, South Korea.

The assignment to Fort Drum was the first for Col. Rosenberg, who said he had arrived in the north country only four days before from a deployment to Iraq.

Planning for his eventual placement in the job, the Army moved his wife, Carol, and their two sons, Cody, 17, and Oden, 14, to the area last year. Col. Rosenberg spent 10 days in the area to help them move into their new housing.

“We have beautiful weather; it’s a beautiful post, a beautiful community,” Col. Rosenberg said. “I really look forward to being here.”
