OGDENSBURG The St. Lawrence Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is asking the Ogdensburg community to be wary of canvassers claiming to be collecting money on behalf of the organization.
Director Karen L. Cunningham said she has received phone calls from Ogdensburg residents who have been solicited for money by people who have not been authorized by the SPCA to do so.
We have no fundraisers going on right now, Ms. Cunningham said.
Ogdensburg Police Chief Richard J. Polniak said there have been no permit requests for door-to-door solicitation within the city limits. The SPCA does not do door-to-door solicitations, he said.
While there have been no complaints filed with the police, Chief Polniak has some tips to avoid being fooled by fraudulent canvassers.
You should be asking for official ID, he said. Call their supervisors and dont give money at the door.
