HARRISVILLE — Jonathan P. Grindal, 65, of 14118 S. Bonaparte Rd., Harrisville, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, at SUNY Upstate NY Medical Center in Syracuse, where he had been a patient since July 18th.

Born May 23, 1947, in Cambridge, MA, a son of Clifford S. and Elizabeth Casey Grindal, he graduated high school from Lincoln Academy in Damariscotta, ME, and later attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, MA.

He married Brenda J. Jones on October 11, 1975, at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.

A Vietnam era veteran, he entered the US Army on October 3, 1968, and served mostly in Germany, Italy and the Alps. He was honorably discharged as a SP4 on October 20, 1971, from Fort Dix, NJ.

Following his military service, he worked for Measurex out of Cupertino, CA, as a computer control systems technician at the Newton Falls Paper Company in Newton Falls. He later went to work for Superior Computers in Carthage, and as a bus driver for 5 years for Harrisvile Central School, retiring in 2010.

Jon was a member of the National American Legion and Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club.

Throughout his life, some of his favorite pastimes included boating, cutting wood, working on handyman projects, and he particularly enjoyed doing anything that he could for family, friends and neighbors. He will be especially remembered for his great sense of humor and his devotion to his family.

Surviving besides his wife of 36 years, are two daughters and a son-in-law, Angela L. and William Evans, of Portland, ME, Amanda L. Grindal, of Syracuse, NY; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rita Grindal, of Nobleboro, ME; his sister, Betsy Cole, of Belleville, Ontario, Canada, and his mother-in-law, Evelyn Jones, of Harrisville; two brothers-in-law, Randy and Ronnie Jones, both of Glenfield, and his beloved nephew, Daniel Mahoney, of Syracuse.

Jon’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. prayer service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Harrisville.

Calling hours will be on Monday (TODAY) from 5 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Loyaltown, 115 E. Bethpage Rd., Plainview, NY 11803. Camp Loyaltown is a camp for developmentally disabled children and adults.
