The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory this week warning of listeria contamination in cantaloupes shipped to New York state.
Contamination was found in samples of cantaloupes from Burch Equipment LLC of North Carolina that were shipped to New York and Maine. The company shipped 580 cases of cantaloupes July 15 that were distributed to markets.
Cantaloupes with a red Burch Farms label and PLU #4319 should be discarded.
People who think they may be ill after eating cantaloupes that were possibly contaminated are advised to consult their doctors. Those with questions about fresh fruit safety may contact the FDA at 1-(888)-SAFEFOOD or by email at consumer@fda.gov.
