ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY – Charles T. Mitchell, 87, of 47330 Dingman Point Road, died Thursday morning at River Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 31st.
Charlie was born June 24, 1925 on Wellesley Island, son of W. Grant and Marie Hulbert Mitchell. He graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and attended Syracuse University. He served in the U.S. Navys submarine service during WWII, in the Pacific Theater. He married Joan Curtin on November 25, 1949, in North Bangor, NY. Mrs. Mitchell died on July 2, 2002.
Charlie worked for many years for the New York State Parks Commission, retiring in 1987 as Regional Director of the Central Region of New York.
He was a life member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII, the Submarine Veterans Inc, and the VFW. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, the Alexandria Bay Rotary Club, and the Church of the St. Lawrence.
He is survived by his son, C. Thomas and his wife Mary, of Alexandria Bay as well as his granddaughters, Jessica and Emily Mitchell, both of Alexandria Bay. He was pre decease by three brothers, James, William and Robert Mitchell.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 am at the Church of the St. Lawrence, Alexandria Bay, with the Rev. Jack Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Wellesley Island.
