HEUVELTON - Since 2008, members of the St. Lawrence Chapter of the Warthogs Motorcycle Club have gathered together to remember state Trooper Shawn W. Snow.

Mr. Snow, 47, a 19-year veteran of the force, died in a double-fatal electrical accident on Aug. 3, 2008, while he was off duty and helping a stranded motorist on the Bridge Approach Road at the Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority.

Each year, The Warthogs Motorcycle Club, a club made up of police officers, peace officers and firemen, have hosted a motorcycle rally honoring Mr. Snow and to raise money for a scholarship in his name.

“Shawn was an exceptional state trooper who had dedicated his life to serving others,” President of the Warthogs Motorcycle Club Terry L. Covey said Wednesday. “He will always be this county’s hero who paid the ultimate price for his fellow man.”

Before the rally, five St. Lawrence County high school students pursuing a career affiliated with law enforcement are chosen to receive a $500 college scholarship.

A banquet was held on July 5 to recognize the recipients and their families at the Inn on the Greens, Ogdensburg.

This year’s recipients were Hermon-DeKalb Central School’s Dylan Amo, Gouverneur Central School’s Jaelyn Gotham, Ogdensburg Free Academy’s Marisa Tolman, Canton Central School’s Jeffrey Hammond, and Parishville-Hopkinton Central School’s Chase Donovan.

Mr. Snow’s widow, Penny R. Snow, was also present.

“Shawn was a very giving and caring person who was always doing something to help someone out,” said Ms. Snow.

The 4th Annual Shawn R Snow Memorial Run will be held on Aug. 18 and starting at the Heuvelton AmVets Post 1997, 107 State St. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Kickstands up at 11 a.m. An autographed hockey stick signed by Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings will be auctioned off at the end of the run.

The ride will include a stop at Trooper Shawn W. Snow Street, the stretch of road named in his honor. The ride will end at the Quality of Work Life building, Ogdensburg, with a pork tenderloin dinner, 50/ 50 raffle and silent auction.

“It’s always been great day, and we’ve always lucked out with the weather,” said Ms. Snow, who sponsors to the rally. “It’s a lot of fun. We meet a lot of people who we may not have met beforehand, but, through unfortunate circumstances, we can come together to honor Shawn.”

In 2011, the group raised $8,000 toward the scholarship fund. This year, the group hopes to raise enough money to build a sustainable account for the fund, Mr. Covey said.
