Chaumont resident, Muriel Benson, age 91, passed away on July 25 in Amsterdam, New York at the River Ridge Living Center, where she had been convalescing following a brief hospitalization.
Born in Englewood, NJ on August 14, 1920, Muriel graduated from Wells High School in Wells, New York where she excelled in sports. Her interest in sports remained a life long passion, including avidly following her favorite professional teams.
Muriel was a resident of Chaumont for over fifty years. Her home on Point Salubrious, shared with her husband, Richard Benson, who predeceased her in 1984, was a source of joy. She particularly enjoyed gardening and observing the abundant wildlife on the Point. Together, the Bensons travelled to the Bahamas each winter where they built and maintained a home on Green Turtle Cay in the Abaco Islands. Muriel was a swimmer and an enthusiastic snorkeler in the Caribbean; her knowledge of the ocean and its inhabitants were well known amongst her family and friends. In recent years, she spent the winter months in Lake Worth, Florida, yet always looked forward to the spring season, when she could return to Chaumont.
Muriel leaves behind her devoted sister, Carol Rogers of Lake Pleasant, NY, and two daughters, RoseAnn Beaudoin of Piseco, NY, and Anne Hallock of Los Angeles, CA, step daughter, Necia Sollein of Sanford, FL, step sons Richard Benson Jr of Brownsville, TX and Walter Benson of Wewahitchee, FL, three grandchildren, Todd Beaudoin, Lisa and Peter Hallock, and step grandchildren, Pamela, Richard, Lynn and Lonn Benson, many great grandchildren and special nieces.
A memorial service will be held at the Chaumont Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 12th at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Chaumont Presbyterian Church, Box 264, Chaumont, New York 13622.
