CANTON — The golden arches at 64 Main St. may be moving to a new location.
The McDonald’s Corp. is considering closing its downtown McDonald’s Restaurant and building a new one adjacent to the Price Chopper grocery store, Route 11, according to a codes enforcement report reviewed Tuesday by the Town Council.
“It’s very preliminary,” Codes Enforcement Officer Russell B. Lawrence IV said. “I don’t have answers to all the questions.”
For several years, rumors have circulated that operators of the Canton McDonald’s wanted a site with more space so a drive-through window could be installed.
James L. O’Donnell, owner of the Canton franchise, is slated to sell all 10 of his north country McDonald’s to the McDonald’s Corp. on Aug. 15.
Located next to the municipal building, the Canton McDonald’s has been a mainstay in the heart of downtown for decades.
Linda M. McQuinn, Canton’s economic development director, said she is confident the existing McDonald’s building will reopen as another business because the location is valuable.
Another restaurant is a likely possibility, she said.
“That’s a prime piece of real estate and it would be extremely attractive for a great many developers,” Ms. McQuinn said. “I think it’s safe to say that it won’t remain vacant.”
Mr. Russell also reported that Frazer Computing Inc. plans to construct a 4,800 square-foot addition to its administrative office building at 6196 Route 11. The town Planning Board is scheduled to review the project at its Aug. 21 meeting. The company, owned by Michael J. Frazer, develops software for used-car dealers.
Mr. Lawrence also reported that three new homes that were supposed to be constructed in the town this year did not go forward.
“I’m told either they are buying an existing home or the sale of their home didn’t go through. I do expect one of these homes to go in the spring,” Mr. Lawrence’s written report states.
