Watertown- Betty Jane Bowie, 90, formerly of 1010 Washington Street, Watertown, NY, died Monday, August 6, 2012 at Mercy of Northern New York, where she had been a resident for four months.

Born on July 16, 1922, in South Rutland, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice Maud Downs. She attended Copenhagen Central School, graduating in 1939. A marriage to Thomas Russell Bowie in 1941 ended in divorce.

After working 15 years at Morgia’s Restaurant, she worked another 24 years at Jefferson Community College. She retired in 1995 as cafeteria manager at the college.

In her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family. She particularly enjoyed attending the sporting events of her grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Thomas and his wife, Sally of Watertown; three daughters and their husbands: Sharon and Warren Cadwell, Watertown; Martha and Donald Dupell, Brownville; and Sally and Daniel Farmer, Watertown; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by three sisters: Helen Fassett, Pulaski; Doris Blodgett, Rodman; and Vivian Bufalini, Watertown; and a sister-in-law: Esther Downs of Adams Center.

She is predeceased by three brothers: Donald, Harold, and Robert Downs; three sisters: Agnes Goodnough, Alice McCreary, and Vera Harrison; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Bowie.

Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours. A private family funeral service will be held with burial in Union Cemetery in Adams Center.

Donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Marilyn Bowie Scholarship Fund, Jefferson Community College Foundation, Watertown, NY.
