There were two interesting articles on the Aug. 3 editorial page of the Watertown Daily Times. At the top of the page was an article by Gerry Goldstein, a Watertown native who brought his new wife to Watertown to show her his roots and how they rescued a puppy on their honeymoon. It is warm and fuzzy, and I would hope if the Goldsteins ever leave Rhode Island that they come back to the north country. We need people like them who are animal caring.
At the bottom of the page is an article about Congressman Bill Owens backing an amendment to crack down on dog and cock fighting. It would make it a crime for an adult to attend such an event or to bring a child to such an event. In addition to humane organizations, there is a long list of organizations that support such an amendment, most of which are law enforcement agencies.
I sincerely hope that this amendment remains in the farm bill, because just maybe by not taking children to blood sports they might just grow up to not shoot up a movie theater full of people or their school full of students or a political rally where the candidate was shot and many attending the event were killed. Children and animals are the most vulnerable members of our society and they need our protection. Thank you, Congressman Owens.
