OGDENSBURG The city is prepared to clean up contamination at the idled Tubroburg cheese plant after receiving a notice of violation from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
At Mondays meeting, the City Council will decide whether a $25,000 cleanup of the King Street plant is warranted, but may have little choice but to approve the operation after the DEC order.
The notice requests Ogdensburg clean up a 12,000 gallon petroleum bulk storage tank and 36 drums of waste liquid left behind after the plants operators, Tubroburg LLC, halted operations in January 2011.
DEC inspectors entered the plant on June 25 to find inadequate marking on the storage containers and that the city had failed to conduct required monthly inspections of the site. The violations, six in all, each carry a penality of $37,500 per day.
