ALEXANDRIA BAY Maxson Airfield on Route 26 has changed hands again.
The new owners, David Labrecque, Durhamville, and Shawn Vick, Wichita, Kan. both of whom are pilots and seasonal residents of Alexandria Bay will keep the name Maxson but maintain it as a private runway.
Mr. Vick said he and Mr. Labrecque saw the airfield slowly fall into disrepair and decided to purchase it after consulting fellow pilots in the area.
We both had used the airfield here to get to our homes in Alex Bay. It was a convenience factor, he said. We did not purchase it with an intention of running a commercial operation.
Pilots can visit Maxson Airfields website www.maxsonairfield.com and gain access to the private runway for a set period.
The former owner, Thousand Islands Airport LLC, Atlanta, Ga., in 2008 bought the 204-acre property surrounding the runway south of the village for $300,000.
Maxsons new owners, however, decided to purchase only the 4,280-foot-long and 60-foot-wide runway for $150,000, according to Jefferson County property sales records and Mr. Vick.
Weve already undertaken a significant amount of maintenance, Mr. Vick said, adding that the runway will be repaired as well. Were excited to have it back open and hope it opens up opportunities for the region.
