Pageant winner wins award for most donations

A pint-sized pageant queen placed top 10 in her age group in a national pageant, with help from area businesses.

Liberty V. McIntyre, 5, competed with over 250 girls around the country in the Sunburst International Finals in Atlanta, Ga., earlier this month. The five-day competition included a model search and swimsuit and gown wear contests. Liberty placed in the top 10 against 38 girls ages 5 and 6.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Liberty. “My favorite part was the swimsuit.”

For over two months Liberty and her mother, Skye M. Sharp, raised close to $2,000 needed to get to the competition by holding raffles outside Wal-Mart, car washes or bottle drives every weekend up to the competition.

“A lot of people gave donations to us so that she could go,” said Ms. Sharp of Ogdensburg. “We are so grateful to the north country. People are so giving up here.”

Liberty received donations from several Ogdensburg businesses, including: Northern Physical Therapy, 203 State St., Simple Pleasures, 7468 Route 37, Hair Trends, 230 Caroline St., Hair Express, 800 State St., Dirty Gringo, 109 Main St., and Fish’er Chips, 608 Ford St.

For all the donations she received, Liberty was recognized with the award for the most donations raised at the competition.

“People just love her. Wherever she goes she is a celebrity,” said Ms. Sharpe. “She puts a smile on everybody’s face. I didn’t matter that she didn’t win the whole competition; she was just happy to be there.”

Liberty will continue to compete in pageants throughout October, including Salt City Royalty and Angel Face, both in Syracuse. Liberty was called back to participate as an ambassador in Salt City Royalty on Oct. 13, Ms. Sharp said. All the money raised from the event will go toward breast cancer awareness. Liberty will participate in Angel Face competition for the first time on Oct. 28.

“I am really excited,” said Liberty. “I can’t wait.”
