Don Coon, the Jefferson County Republican Party chairman, and Michael Backus, the Oswego County Republican Party chairman, are sending me periodic updates on the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
The Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan Bonanza was delayed for a day because of inclement weather, but Mr. Coon and Mr. Backus, both Romney delegates, are seemingly taking it in stride.
Mr. Coon was on the same flight to Tampa as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who ran for the party's nomination this year. Mr. Coon sent a picture that he snapped.
"In the pic he's waiting to pick up his bags (yes he had to get his own bags!) there was a barbershop quartet there to entertain us while we were waiting," Mr. Coon said in an email. "You don't see that every day at the baggage carousel!
Overall everybody is taking the delay in stride. The convention is postponed, but the other events are going forward. Last night there was a welcome party at the Tropicana Stadium. There were 10 thousand or more people in the venue, but you never waited in line for a drink or food. The logistics are daunting, but the organizers have done a fantastic job. everyone had to go through an airport-type of screening to get into the stadium, but even then I didn't wait more than a minute in line.
Overall I'm very impressed with the organization so far. I hope that the speeches will be equally impressive and inspiring!"
Mr. Backus, who is the youngest county chairman in the state and one of the youngest GOP leaders in the country, said the weather isn't that bad, though there could be rain and high winds in the future. He sent along a picture of Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, speaking.
