The love of reading is making at least one person boogie down at the Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library.

Sarah Parker Ada, a Greater 1000 Islands Literacy Council member, is getting the north country excited about the upcoming New York State Reading Association conference in late October by creating a musical parody of tween favorite “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen at the city’s local library.

In the video posted on YouTube’s website just days ago, she is seen reading books in the new teen space, reaching for her library card at the reference desk and dancing by the iconic marble lion.

“I go to the Flower Memorial Library and check out books there all the time,” Mrs. Ada said. “Growing up, I’ve always loved ‘Weird Al.’ I’ve chosen two songs that are pretty popular with teens. It’s speaks to kids more. It gets them more into it.”

Her love of reading is not just because of her place on the literacy council. She also is an adjunct professor for freshman composition at Jefferson Community College and is getting a degree in secondary English education, which she describes as her passion.

She posted the video “Read It Maybe” on YouTube.com and Twitter on Tuesday not knowing how fast she would start generating viewers.

“I like to say it went viral among book nerds,” she said. “Twitter was also a big spreading mechanism among authors.”

The video received 309 views as of Wednesday afternoon. Her other promotional video at another local library parodying Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” posted in June has reached nearly 13,000 views.

In the video “Read it Maybe,” she wears a sparkly top and red wig while dancing through the library and showing up in people’s homes with books. The children and teens she talks to look as if Mrs. Ada clearly is intruding in their homes and appear skeptical while she continues to sing, “Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here’s a book now so read it maybe?”

When a book magically pops into their hand, they get excited and start flipping through pages with enthusiasm.

“What I literally told the two boys was, ‘OK, a strange woman just appeared in your living room and gave you a book,’” she said. “‘How are you going to act? I might be an intruder.’”

“I’m hoping to do more videos like this,” she said.
