Due to a typographical error, a Times editorial Wednesday erroneously reported the amount of a secret settlement to satisfy a sexual harassment claim against Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez.
Speaker Sheldon Silver approved a $103,080 settlement accompanied by a confidentiality agreement to keep quiet misconduct allegations by one or two women earlier this year. Mr. Lopez was also required to attend a sexual harassment seminar.
The hushed-up June 13 agreement came to light this week following Speaker Silvers censure of Mr. Lopez after two other women filed sexual harassment charges against the assemblyman. He was also stripped of a committee chairmanship and seniority and barred from hiring interns and anyone under 21.
In a letter to Mr. Lopez that graphically described his behavior, Assembly Speaker referred to the misconduct occurring in June and July.
Perhaps if Speaker Silver had been more forthcoming and taken more decisive action the first time, two other women would not have been groped by the assemblyman.
