FORT DRUM A weeklong preseason camp on post for Syracuse Universitys football team cost the school $62,747.50, according to a tabulation released Friday.
According to post spokeswoman Julie A. Cupernall, the two parties agreed to the costs before the trip. She said the militarys costs for hosting the team would be limited to minor items such as players using on-post restrooms.
Of the total figure, about $47,000 will go to the posts Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation office, the program that helps facilitate recreational programs for soldiers and their families. The rest will go to appropriated funds that support specific tasks.
Among the costs assigned to the university for the trip was $37,392.50, which included a breakfast, lunch and snack from the FMWR, along with a dinner in a post dining hall. Transportation costs, which included four buses and drivers per day, totaled $14,000. Lodging costs, which included laundry and linen service from the FMWR and custodial services from the posts Department of Public Works, cost $11,355. The FMWR program, whose budget comes from primarily nonappropriated sources, can offer its services to nonmilitary entities at market prices.
The university also handled costs related to upkeep of the posts Sligh Field, although the cost of completing the work was not available.
The team was on post from Aug. 12 to 19, and throughout the week, players, coaches and military leadership spoke positively of the experience.
Post commander Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley said the week of practice was a morale booster and a way for the post to promote itself and its soldiers to the public.
Team spokeswoman Sue Edson was not available for comment Friday. However, in a previous call, she said she would not be able to comment on team finances.
