Gallagher solid in Malone’s 42-0 win in NAC football

CANTON — After a strong junior season last year, Malone quarterback Mitchell Gallagher got off to a good start again Saturday, leading the Huskies to a 42-0 rout of Canton in an Northern Athletic Conference game.

Gallagher completed 8-of-10 passes for 63 yards and rushed for 87 yards on just nine carries, scoring three touchdowns, including a 35-yard run in the second quarter.

John Picaro gained 79 yards on just seven carries for the Huskies, including a 39-yard touchdown. Jake Perry produced two touchdowns for Malone, including the team’s first score of the season on a 29-yard burst. Nate Miller rushed for 46 yards to pace Canton.

POTSDAM 41, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Adam Lewis gained 100 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Sandstoners opened the season with a rout of St. Lawrence Central in an NAC game in Potsdam.

Sandstoners quarterback Will Coleman played for the first time since suffering an injury in the final game of last season and went 3-for-3 for 46 yards. Potsdam’s Oden Robertson, who was on the Larries last season, scored on a 91-yard kickoff return to start the second half.

A-P-W 28, Immaculate Heart 14

Jarid Paninski passed for 276 yards and three touchdowns as the Rebels spoiled the Cavaliers’ 2012 debut with a Section 3 Class C North Division win at Parish.

Paninski hit Joe Carusone on a 24-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and on an 83-yard pass in the third quarter. He also connected with Aaron Marshall for a 28-yard score in the third quarter.

Altmar-Parish-Williamstown recovered an IHC fumble in the end zone for its fourth score.

IHC’s two touchdowns came on passes from quarterback Matt Moran to wide receiver Nick Koelmel covering 7 and 3 yards.

GIRLS SOCCER

CAMDEN 2, WATERTOWN 1

Madison Kirch scored off a Karly Kiel corner kick with one second left to give the Blue Devils the victory over the host Cyclones in the championship of the Watertown Tournament.

Kiel also scored the first goal of the game for Camden (2-0), while Leah Rojas scored for Watertown (1-1).

Bri Arthur, Hannah Keggins and Morgan Cadwell made the all-tournament team for the Cyclones.

OFA 1, LISBON 1 (OT)

Nikki Holmes scored in regulation and in a shootout as the Blue Devils (0-0-2) claimed their own tournament title by edging Lisbon 3-1 in penalty kicks.

Holmes scored in the 36th minute and Lisbon (1-0-1) tied the game with a goal from Beth Crowley in the 87th minute.

Nikki Duprey and Alicia Shaver also scored in the shootout for OFA, and Lisbon’s lone goal in the shootout was from Madison Vine.

OFA goalie Erica Chase, who made seven saves in the game and gave up just one goal in back-to-back shootouts, was named the Most Valuable Player.

HEUVELTON 2, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 0

Alexis Weidner scored one goal and assisted on another as the Bulldogs defeated Norwood-Norfolk (0-1-1) in the consolation game of the OFA Tournament.

Logan Tallman scored the first goal for Heuvelton (1-1). Ashlyn Foster made 15 saves for the shutout.

BOYS SOCCER

ROME FREE ACADEMY 2, INDIAN RIVER 1

Kyle Baker scored a pair of goals as the Black Knights took home the Cyclone Booster Club Tournament title with a win over the Warriors in the title game.

Spencer Kahler made eight saves for Rome Free Academy (2-0).

Ty Godin netted a goal for Indian River (1-1). Teammate Erick Torres was named to the all-tournament team.

WATERTOWN 1, WHITESBORO 0

Brad McKinney scored in the 31st minute to lift the Cyclones in the consolation game of the Cyclone Booster Club Tournament.

Noah Taylor stopped all seven shots he faced for Watertown (1-1). Shayne Watson made the all-tournament team.
