GOUVERNEUR A family of four jumped from a window Monday to escape an early morning fire.
Police said John and Amanda Ulmen were alerted by heavy smoke upstairs in their Cream of the Valley Road residence shortly before 5 a.m.
Mr. Ulmen suffered a broken ankle when he jumped out of a window. Mrs. Ulmen tossed their two children, 3 years old and 2 weeks old, out the window to her husband, then jumped herself, also breaking her ankle.
Both adults suffered from smoke inhalation and all four family members were taken to the hospital, police said.
The residence, which was insured and owned by Shawn Storie, was a total loss. The family was left homeless.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
