CANTON— Former Gouverneur Mayor Christopher A. Miller returned to St. Lawrence County Court on Tuesday morning to answer accusations that he violated terms of his probation.

Mr. Miller, 30, of 171 Rowley St., Gouverneur, who resigned from his position Aug. 15, was charged with felony third-degree grand larceny six days later.

He is accused of drawing up a fraudulent land-sale contract and selling a house at 31 Edith St. to Ronald and Heather Sliter for $50,000 in March. Mr. Miller allegedly was a joint owner of that property and therefore did not have the right to sell it, police said.

He was sentenced to three years’ probation in Jefferson County Court in January 2010 after pleading guilty to second-degree criminal trespass and petit larceny, both misdemeanors.

In that case, he admitted to unlawfully entering an apartment belonging to Heather Zrnick, in the town of LeRay, and taking money without her permission.

His arrest in August violated that probation sentence, which carried terms requiring him to report any contact with police within one day and not to violate any state or federal laws.

Thursday’s proceeding was adjourned to allow Mr. Miller’s newly appointed attorney, John W. Hallett, Watertown, time to become familiar with the case.

Mr. Miller was sent back to St. Lawrence County jail without bail to await his return to court date of Sept. 17.
