CANTON A vacant parcel at 30 W. Main St. may be developed into a veterans memorial park and walkway under a plan presented last week to the village Planning Board by members of Edward C. Seymour Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231.
The 0.46-acre parcel is zoned residential and has been vacant for several years with a for-sale sign out front. Its surrounded by houses and is not far from the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services center.
To allow a park at the site, the Planning Board would have to issue a special exception.
The property is owned by Noreen Sheridan, 5838 County Route 27. If the project moves forward, the parcel would be sold to the Canton VFW.
The U-shaped park would feature bricks that could be purchased to be inscribed with the names of military veterans.
The property is assessed for $13,000 and annual property taxes are roughly $520.
