Richard “Rick” Backus, age 61, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 in Lubbock, TX. Rick was born July 5, 1951 in Gouverneur, New York to Fred and Patricia Backus. He graduated from Canton High School in 1969. Rick married Coral Knox May 30, 1970. He received a teaching degree from Brockport, NY, then went to Potsdam State for a Masters in Education. He then went to ATC for a nursing degree and West Texas A&M, Canyon, TX, for a Bachelors of Nursing. He worked at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock from 1981 to 1996 in the ER department and as an ACLS Instructor. He loved basketball, was the girl’s basketball coach at ATC, and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Rick is survived by his wife Coral; son Steven and wife Mary; daughter Michelle Backus and husband James Perry; 2 brothers, Larry and wife Bev and Fred; sister, Wanda Lee and husband Mark; grandchildren, Jennifer, Melanee, Adrian, Aaron, Anthony and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Zaven, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lorraine.

Visitation will be Monday, September 10, 2012 from 6 to 8 pm in Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday September 11 at 1pm in the Abbey Chapel of Resthaven Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to Diabetes Assoc. or Make A Wish Foundation.
