Great Bend- Betty J. (Mason) ONeil, 88, of Route 3, Great Bend N.Y. died early Sunday morning, September 9, 2012 at her home. Born on May 13, 1924 at her family home on the Herrings Road. The daughter of Charles J. and Clara B. (Britton) Mason; the first of 3 daughters.
Betty married Vincent P. ONeil Sr. on February 22, 1942 at the St. James Rectory in Carthage, New York. Mr. ONeil ran the Motor Pool at Fort Drum until his retirement. Mrs. ONeil worked for her sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Wally Sobek, at the Green Light Restaurant. They moved to Lake Bonaparte to enjoy their retirement in 1973.
Betty was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club, and The VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Carthage. She enjoyed traveling, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, loved playing Yatzee, Scrabble and other games with friends and family. She enjoyed attending Senior Events, The Friday Farmers Market in Carthage, The McDonald and ONeil family reunions, and shopping. She never drove but she was always ready to go when you called and asked her to go with you!
Betty is survived by her loving sister and brother-in-law, Alice Marie and Clarence Waite, Natural Bridge; her sister-in-laws, Helen Hughes, Albuquerque, NM, Mrs. Francis Charlotte Sue (Lottie Sue) ONeil, Louisville, KY; and Barbara ONeil and her husband Charlie Brown of San Antonio, TX.
Her six children, Peggy and Larry Dening, Lowville, NY and Sumterville, Florida; Harold ONeil, Red Boiling Springs, TN; Vincent and Pat ONeil, Natural Bridge; Helen and Chuck Ziegler, Watertown, and Lake Bonaparte; John and Dee ONeil, Great Bend; and Wally and Donna ONeil, Black River.
She is also survived by 17-grandchildren, 32-Great-Grandchildren and 1-Great-Great Granddaughter. Several Nieces and Nephews, Cousins and Loving Friends.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Charlie and Clara Mason. Her in Laws, Hugh and Loretta (McDonald) ONeil, her husband, Vincent P. ONeil Sr. who passed in 1985 then a week later, her sister, Eleanor Sobek and a month later her youngest sister, Alices Husband, James Rue of Stockbridge, GA.
She was pre-deceased by her husbands brothers and sisters. Harold E. ONeil, died in WWII, Francis ONeil and Hugh and Mary ONeil of Louisville, KY. Kate and Gerald Britton of Lake Bonaparte and Carthage. Arthur ONeil, N.Y.C., Donald ONeil, San Antonio, TX; Marjoire and Ashley Townsend of Carthage and two weeks ago her brother in Law Robert Hughes of Albuquerque, NM; his wife Helen ONeil Hughes brought his ashes to Arlington VA for a Funeral Service with friends and family there. She then brought his ashes to St. Peters and St. Pauls Cemetery in New Boston, N.Y. Following the service a wake was held in Lowville where several family members gathered, not knowing this would also be the last time many would say Good-Bye to Betty.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Great Bend Fire Department.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 14, 2012 from 3-4pm at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc. Located at 500 State Street in Carthage. A Funeral Service will be held at 4:00pm in the Chapel of the Funeral Home with the Reverend Linda J. Harris, officiating. Burial will be held privately by the family.
