Owens camp hits back on Medicare

Democratic Rep. Bill Owens' campaign is hitting back against allegations from Republican opponent Matt Doheny that he voted to cut Medicare.
The campaign's fourth television spot, which will air in the Watertown and Albany markets, starts with a folksy, north country-themed zinger: "Matt Doheny's attack ad. As old as the Adirondacks."
Mr. Doheny, a Republican of Watertown, has accused Mr. Owens of supporting $700 billion in cuts to Medicare by virtue of Mr. Owens' support for President Obama's health care overhaul. Nonpartisan fact checker Politifact has debunked similar claims.
The spot also offers a defense of Obamacare — while even using the word!
"Bill Owens wants to fix Obamacare, not repeal it all," the ad states. "We can't go back to letting the insurance industry deny care for pre-existing conditions."
The advertisement says that Mr. Owens worked with Republicans to repeal taxes on small businesses. While it's true that burdensome tax reporting requirements — 1099 provisions — were repealed and that Mr. Owens supported it, it's also true that the medical device excise tax is still actually in place, because the Senate hasn't moved to repeal it. So the claim that "Bill Owens worked with Republicans to repeal the Obamacare tax increase on businesses" is misleading.
Mr. Doheny has yet to get into specifics about what he would do with the Medicare program.
Back to the ad: "Matt Doheny is the one who wants to cut Medicare."
Also, I know you are, but what am I?, said Mr. Owens, D-rubber, to Mr. Doheny, R-glue.
