Schimpf helps Watertown beat Carthage

Kenny Schimpf’s unassisted goal in the 24th minute proved to be the game winner as host Watertown edged Carthage 2-1 in a Frontier League “A” Division boys soccer game Saturday.

Brad McKinney scored the game’s first goal for Watertown (5-1 overall, 4-0 league). Goalie Noah Taylor made six saves.

Noah LoConte scored the lone goal for Carthage (2-2), and goalie Sebastian Fountain finished with eight saves.

GENERAL BROWN 4, SANDY CREEK 0

Cole Johnson accounted for two goals in the Lions’ “B” Division victory at Dexter.

Adam Vodicka and Ryan Sheridan also scored for General Brown (2-3).

Sandy Creek is 0-4.

LOWVILLE 1, COPENHAGEN 1

Wyatt Carpenter scored unassisted in the 10th minute as the Red Raiders remained unbeaten by tying the Golden Knights in crossover play at Lowville.

Goalie Collin Farquhar made seven saves for Lowville (4-0-1).

Travis Clarke scored in the seventh minute, and Kody Petrus made five saves for Copenhagen (3-0-1).

ALEXANDRIA 7, SOUTH LEWIS 0

Ian Kearns’s torrid scoring pace continued as he scored five goals for the Purple Ghosts in a crossover victory in Turin.

Kearns has 15 goals this season for Alexandria (4-0-1). Jordan VanBrocklin chipped in with two goals and an assist.

South Lewis dropped to 1-5.

THOUSAND ISLANDS 6, BELLEVILLE HENDERSON 0

Aaron Zehr, Reed Donnelly and Scott McKain each recorded one goal and one assist in the Vikings’ crossover win at Clayton.

David Powers and Tyler Pacific also scored, and Sam Ada made just one save for Thousand Islands (2-2).

LYME 2, LAFARGEVILLE 1 (OT)

Sam Liakovitch put home a cross from Troy Wilson in the 87th minute to help the Indians edge the Red Knights in “D” Division play at LaFargeville. Wilson also scored for Lyme (3-2).

Elijah Huntley tied the game in the 63rd minute for LaFargeville (1-3).

SACKETS HARBOR 0, BEAVER RIVER 0

Goaltender Zachary Steiner made nine saves for the Beavers (1-2-1) as the crossover matchup resulted in an overtime tie at Beaver Falls.

Jake Flagg made eight saves for Sackets Harbor (1-2-2).

HARRISVILLE 6, CLIFTON-FINE 0

Joey Butts generated three goals and Tim Fowler tallied two goals and drew two assists to lift Harrisville to a 6-0 win over Clifton-Fine in a semifinal game of the Harrisville Tournament in Harrisville. It was also a Northern Athletic Conference West Division game.

The tournament was delayed by rain Friday so Harrisville will meet Immaculate Heart Central in the championship game and Clifton-Fine will play Edwards-Knox in the consolation game at a date to be announced.

Chris Graham also scored for Harrisville (2-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

THOUSAND ISLANDS 8, GENERAL BROWN 0

Allie Barton and Brook Garrett each netted a pair of goals as the Vikings routed the Lions in crossover play at Clayton.

Morgan Robbins also scored on a direct kick for Thousand Islands (3-0-1).

General Brown fell to 0-5-0.

GIRLS SWIMMING

FAVRET, CYCLONES SHINE

Samantha Favret won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, clocking meet records in both races, and swam on the first-place 200 medley relay to help Watertown earn the team title by just eight points during the “A” Division Invitational at Watertown High School.

Watertown scored 270 points, while Whitesboro (262) took second place. Glens Falls (216) and Mexico (204) were third and fourth, respectively, out of seven teams.

Favret’s time of 25.64 seconds in the 50 freestyle broke a 15-year old record held by a swimmer from Cortland. Favret broke her own 100 backstroke record from last year with a time of 1 minute, 1.30 seconds.

Brittney Thesier captured the 500 free and swam on the winning relay for Watertown.

Mia Cote of Glens Falls broke a 15-year old meet record in her 100 butterfly victory, and she swam on both winning freestyle relays, which clocked meet records.

SCULLY POWERS SPARTANS

Megan Scully captured the 100-yard breaststroke and contributed to the first-place 200 medley relay to help South Jefferson score 244 points to earn the team title at the “B” Division Invitational at South Lewis in Turin.

Thousand Islands tallied 185.5 points for second place, while Cooperstown (155) and Lowville (130) placed third and fourth, respectively, out of nine teams.

Joanne Bechaz claimed the 200 free for Thousand Islands. Keegan Bowman won the 100 butterfly for Beaver River, which took sixth.

CROSS COUNTRY

TYLER WINS AT V-V-S INVITATIONAL

South Jefferson’s Nick Tyler won the group one race at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Invitational in Vernon.

Tyler ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:04.7 to pace the Spartans to a fifth place finish. Jake Erdman of Gouverneur was 10th. Beaver River finished fourth in group two.

Victoria Campanian of South Lewis placed second in the group one race to lead her team to eighth place. Skylar Pastor of South Jefferson placed ninth and the Spartans finished fourth. Gabby Thompson of Immaculate Heart Central finished 10th.

Beaver River was seventh in the girls group two race.
