HEUVELTON – A piece of north country culture got national exposure over the weekend.
Amish hats from Pickens General Store were featured Saturday on the NBC comedy show Saturday Night Live.
The hats, worn by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane and comedian Tim Robinson, sell for about $20 apiece at Pickens.
Im guessing they did a Google search, said Betsy C. Hebert, manager of the Pickens General Store online shop, describing how the NBC show stumbled upon the store.
Ms. Hebert said someone from NBC, most likely an assistant to an assistant, called her and said they were from Saturday Night Live and wanted to order the hats to use on the Sept. 15 show.
She shipped the hats to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York on Sept. 13.
The skit featuring the hats was poking fun at websites that sell Amish goods.
It was a good way to make fun of ourselves, Ms. Hebert said.
In the skit, the Yoder Brothers, played by Mr. MacFarlane and Mr. Robinson, say they are going to be selling wooden spoons they have been making for one hundred summers on something called Internet.
It was a little brutal on Amish culture, Ms. Hebert said, but she said it seemed good-humored.
The skit can be viewed online at NBC.com.
A Saturday Night Live representative could not be reached for comment.
