CHAUMONT — A Gouverneur man was killed Thursday afternoon in a work-related accident on Water Street.

Jefferson County sheriff’s detectives said Ronald C. Watson, 39, an employee of Ryan’s Tree Service, Theresa, was working alone grinding a stump about 3:15 p.m. when he became pinned between the operator’s protective shield on the chipper and an adjacent building.

A sheriff’s deputy, assisted by members of the Chaumont Fire Department, Three Mile Bay’s fire department and ambulance squad and Guilfoyle Ambulance, Watertown, helped free Mr. Watson, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives said the investigation into the accident is continuing with the assistance of the Jefferson County medical examiner’s office and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
